About this deal

i understand its a collection of essays he wrote for an underground California magazine in the 1970s (i think). He also speaks for the thoughts and actions of humanity that is not dogmatic idealism, some people are embarrassed when they fart, but imagine if they farted and had a follow through?

Packed with violence, women, gambling and booze, Bukowski’s semi-autobiographical stories veer between hilarity and despair, as he extols the inherent beauty and futility of life. The Auditory-Visual Integration of Anger is impaired in Alcoholism: an Event-Related Potentials Study". At one point, someone says to a Bukowski self-insert character, "It doesn't matter whether your stories are true," to which Bukowski replies "They are. It begins during his early childhood by explaining the difficult relationship that he had with his father. I was expecting something witty and intelligent, what I got was violent, crude, misogynistic and highly unpleasant, in the beginning at least.

The rants, stories, and prose poems collected here are uneven in quality, but enough of them held my interest so that I was able to finish reading "Notes of a Dirty Old Man.

Barfly (the movie he wrote about his life) wasn’t bad, I watched it after reading, but then I read that he didn’t like his actor’s portrayal.my pure and beautiful slim and magic little girl glorious fuck with the hair dangling down to the asshole, and next to her the tragedy of the ages: slime and horror, the machine gone wrong, frogs tortured by little boys and head-on car collisions and the spider taking in the ball-less buzzing fly and the landscape brain of Primo Carnera going down under the dull playboy guns of cocksure Maxie Baer — new heavyweight champ of America — I, I rushed at the Tragedy of the Ages — that fat slob of accumulated shit. Almost all of the "Notes of a Dirty Old Man" columns have been collected by City Lights Books: Notes of a Dirty Old Man (1969), Erections, Ejaculations and General Tales of Ordinary Madness (1972), Tales of Ordinary Madness (1983), The Most Beautiful Woman in Town and Other Stories (1983), Portions from a Wine-Stained Notebook (2008), Absence of the Hero (2010), More Notes of a Dirty Old Man (2011), The Bell Tolls for No One (2015), and The Mathematics of the Breath and the Way (2018). As much as these little stories are impossible to forget, however, it is Bukowski's wry observations on life that really shine through, such as 'The difference between a brave man and a coward is a coward thinks twice before jumping in the cage with a lion. If he isn't bluffing, he has coasted from a childhood of abuse and hatred to an adulthood of boozing, rape, violence, and laziness, all while maintaining interiority and literary wit. If this serves as a catalyst towards anyone else reading it then that's cool, but I honestly couldn't really care either way.
