About this deal

Curiously, any changes made in the editor have to be dropped on to this image to take effect — there's no incremental editing process.

Again there's no indication of which modes are active, so it might have made more sense to have a way to group the buttons into on/off pairs instead. The editor manages presets (left-hand panel), and allows MIDI configuration on a preset-by-preset basis (right-hand panel). This might be interesting, especially coupled with a weight factor and inertia, to add a lot of dynamics to all the notes. The playing surfaces are highly sensitive to touch and you can get a much greater dynamic response than you would expect from something with no moving parts. I reviewed the Sensel Morph back in October, but mentioned the Joué in that article since I first came across the latter some months before that.I suppose the easiest thing to do is use the X-Y pads as a base configuration and then map the input within a script. The selection of different modules (nine in total at the time of writing) covers a range of MIDI control duties, from keyboards and fretboard to knobs and faders. Capture your musical ideas wherever you are with Joué Play and complete your creation in your DAW with Audio STEMS and MIDI export.

The board is made from French beechwood, and metal, and feels more substantial than the average budget controller with wooden elements reminiscent of Snyderphonics Manta, and Livid Instruments’ Ohm. I was strangely able to fiddle with the exact placement of my fingers to get the full aftertouch values while in the same “general” horizontal plane so I think there are 8 horizontal strips, with even and odd strips being shared for the 4 horizontal “areas. So I decided to accept that its useless for pressure, and to just use it in situations where I want to focus on pitch and Y gestures. For testing I used ROLI Equator and FXpansion Cypher2 (which are MPE-capable), both stand-alone and in Bitwig Studio, and I also fired up Cycling '74 Max to inspect MIDI controller messages more closely.Enable the MPE mode within the Joué Editor and you'll be able to modulate all your MIDI parameters simultaneously. I think I might make a separate thread for ongoing discussion of development, if nothing else to keep me sane while I grok a new skillset. Bring unique expressiveness to your music creation and access a new dimension of sound design with the compact and modular MPE MIDI controller.
