About this deal

Met deze strip sloot ik de cyclus van de vier graphic novels/strips, die autobiografisch of sterk autobiografische elementen bevatten, af: The Snowman, Gentleman Jim, When the Wind Blows en deze. We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there is something for every literary palate. Splash stain residues and waviness to upper left front edge of jacket, discolored patch along lower front edge of DJ with further stain marks to edges of rear of DJ, corners a little pushed otherwise VG, unmarked.

Ogni capitolo è scandito da decenni (‘30-‘40; ‘40-‘50; ‘50-‘60; ‘60-‘70) per poi giungere al capitolo finale, che comprende solo il 1970-1971. I find it interesting how different each decade appears in this book and how easily our opinions changes during our life. Joan Didion did it well in The Year of Magical Thinking, but she didn't have to draw a picture of her father on his deathbed.

They don't believe he will be making any money and they don't understand the difference between pursuing what you love versus getting a typical 9-5 job and be bored and resenting every moment of that. Stirred a variety of deeply personal emotions and prompted recognition of values and social mores I subscribed to and totally accepted many years ago. Ethel and Ernest's life together began in the 1920's and ended in the 1970's (you'd have to be made of stone not to be moved by the ending).

Follow that life as they (and Raymond) go through enormous changes and end up in a world that was unimaginable at the start of the book. While reading this book it brought nostalgic feelings for me and my family and I appreciate how much my grandparents had to go through so much being immigrants in a foreign country, getting a job and trying to provide food and clothes from my mother and her siblings. First edition, first impression, signed and warmly inscribed by Raymond Briggs in the year of publication. This is a truly beautiful book , which is also a book of social history with the dark days of WW11, and all the changes that Ethel and Ernest experience as they brought up their only son.

Ethel and Ernest' (1998) is an affecting, effectively told and brilliantly illustrated graphic novel, telling the story of Briggs' parents from the 1930's to the 1970's. Ethel and Ernest also struck a chord with my twelve year old grandson who was captivated and moved by this unfolding of mundane but unforgettable lives as opposed to his usual diet of super heroes, time lords or teenage wizards. So I am glad to have read this rather different story about how Briggs imagines his parents's 43 years together. They kind of represent most British people's grandparents I would imagine, or maybe even great-grandparents. For his contribution as a children's illustrator Briggs was a runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1984.
