About this deal

Players are dealt a secret card that indicates their relationship to other players, and save for the Sheriff this is not revealed to the table. As an important lesson on moderation in alcohol consumption, every beer lets you heal any player (including yourself) one health.

Play continues until one team meets its winning condition – and death won't necessarily keep you from winning as long as your teammates pull through. Dice are marked by symbols, and while colour is used it’s not the only way faces are differentiated. The game does require a degree of numeracy (for tracking health, and also for working out which target is viable for a bullet), some literacy (for understanding character powers), and the ability to decouple action from outcome (particularly when it comes to the arrows). In good old fashioned yahtzee style, if you don’t like what you’ve got, you can reroll up to twice before settling on your decision. If I tried my hardest to nitpick, then I guess the abilities of certain characters seem more useful than others, but this really doesn't damage the game so it's not worth worrying about. For comparison, something like Elder Signs requires players to portion out their allowance of dice with an eye to future requirements and sequential pre-requisites. That’s the spirit of the experience you’re getting here, and it’s exactly as weirdly disconnected as it sounds.

Each character also gets a number of health points represented by bullets they can fit into their body before there’s no room left. Firstly there needs to be an active bluff, wherein players are encouraged to openly lie to others about their true identity. The colour of cards is a lot more marked than the text, which is in an awkward font, and if that differentiating factor is lost it will have an impact. The player may inflict a point of damage on an opponent seated the appropriate number of seats from him.

The Dice Game, the only player you can trust is yourself (unless you forget which role you have and accidentally sabotage yourself).

The Dice Game comes with five dice, a deck of a few different types of cards, and cardboard arrow and bullet tokens. As evidenced by one of my shortest posts ever, this game doesn’t take much time or effort to explain. The Sheriff and deputies need to kill the outlaws, the outlaws win by killing the Sheriff, and the renegades want to be the last players alive in the game. On a turn, a player can roll the five dice up to three times, using the results of the dice to shoot neighbouring players, increase the range of his shots, heal his (or anyone else's) life points, or put him in range of the Indians, which are represented by nine tokens in the center of the table. It can take longer to set up than it does to play, which given how little time setup takes, is pretty great. The Dice Game uses dice, making them approximately as distinct as Duel Monsters and Dungeon Dice Monsters. The same can be said about the comment you made – it’s not a “bad review” just because you disagree it.

The only downside was a missing bullet token when I unpacked the game (there was just a hole in the sheet), but this might have been a single occurrence. When all of his tokens are depleted, the character succumbs to the onslaught and is out of the game. It’d be really nice to see an expansion come for this, especially if it adds some elements that are missing from this iteration of BANG! This adds some optional elements to the base game, so depending on the available time (or experience of the players) you can add or ignore the modules this expansion offers. For example, Willy the Kid can use the Gatling Gun when rolling only two Gatling Gun symbols (as opposed to three), while Vulture Sam gains two life points every time another player is eliminated. The strategy in this game isn’t really in what you roll, but how you sell it to the other players, doing your best to convince them that it is in their best interests to be shot by you. It always seems a little perfunctory as a review conclusion to say ‘It’s fine but you can do better’, but really… Bang the Dice Game is fine. A player’s turn involves rolling the five dice up to three times and then resolving the symbols rolled.
