About this deal

Withers' calm, self-assured voice hovers above it all, doubling as a warm blanket that adds comfort and grace to lyrics steeped in maturity, perspective, and compassion. In 2020, Still Bill ranked number 333 on Rolling Stone 's revised edition of the " 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Had high expectations considering Bill Withers Live album and the Greatest Hits are some of the best things MOFI has done. However, out of the three audiophile Bill Withers albums I have ("Just As I Am," Speakers corner and "+'Justments," Vinyl Me Please), this one is the loser of the bunch. Hoping for better with this Bill Withers, but reading the above it appears to be par for the MFSL course.

In 2007, Still Bill was included in The Guardian 's list of "1,000 albums to hear before you die", with an accompanying essay that said the album "contains two of [Withers'] most epochal and best-loved compositions 'Lean on Me' and 'Who Is He (And What Is He to You)? What attracted me more than the richer sound palette here, though, is his words: dialectic, poetic, but also simple. These are shades-of-gray stories, full of a mature understanding of human nature", Moon observed, before concluding that, "even when reflecting on weighty matters, Withers cultivates a mood of unflappable calm, making everything sound like a lazy summer evening on the front porch. It comes as little surprise that Kevin Rowland made this record one of his key texts during one of the most intense phases of Dexys Midnight Runners. It also features some of Withers' most popular songs, including the hit singles " Lean on Me" and " Use Me".That grounding forever separates Withers from other contemporary soul greats – and stamps Still Bill with a conversational nature and egoless approachability. These characteristics – along with Withers’ strong singing, hybrid arrangements, and deceptively simple songwriting – have allowed the album to endure to the point where it sounds as fresh today as in 1972. And there are some good tracks here (I quite like Withers delving into funk), along with some pretty standard soul music. Then there's the quality of the songwriting, which is as assured on the grooving "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" as it is on the suspicious, paranoid "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?

The first time I spun it I was happy but not blown away, on my 3rd play now and it sounds MUCH better. I find that it has all of the signatures of a typical modern MoFi pressing, the bass is definitely enhanced over what you are going to hear on the original pressings.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Don't be fooled just by 'Lean on Me', this album contains many other songs in a totally different style.
